IMPORTANT NOTICE - There are several major issues with VideoPaper Builder. View our Known Issues page for descriptions of the issues and work-arounds.

The Caption Editor

The Caption Editor is a feature of VideoPaper Builder which is integrated with the main VideoPaper Builder Interface and provides the capability to add captions directly in VideoPaper Builder.

The VideoPaper Builder Caption Editor is specialized in that it allows for the creation of multiple rows (TRACKS) of captions; this is useful to prevent overlapping text content. For example, a video may have several speakers, all speaking at once; instead of using a single row of captions to display utterances, one after the other (which may result in an utterance being cut off to make room for the next), multiple rows can be used to allow text to appear for the entire duration of a speaker’s utterance, and to show utterances by multiple speakers to appear onscreen at the same time.

The Caption Editor has two sections: the Caption Organizer, located in the CAPTIONS tab in the right column of the VideoPaper Builder Interface, and the Captions Wizard, which opens by clicking on the list of imported transcripts in the Caption Organizer.

Preparing to Use the Caption Editor

In order to use the Caption Editor, it is helpful for the author to have a) previously selected a Video File to use (see VIDEOPAPER SETTINGS) and b) a transcript of the Video File ready to work with. The transcript can be imported as a single file containing all utterances(each delineated by speaker name), or in multiple files, using one file per speaker to contain a list of all utterances by that speaker.

Transcript files should be saved as plain text (.txt) files. Utterance lines should be listed in sequence and formatted with a single carriage return between each line:

Utterance[carriage return]
Utterance[carriage return]
Utterance[carriage return]

Files containing utterances by multiple speakers should use the format:

SpeakerName:[tab]Utterance[carriage return]
SpeakerName:[tab]Utterance[carriage return]
SpeakerName:[tab]Utterance[carriage return]

For example:

Teacher:      How does the law of conservation of energy relate to the roller coaster? Kristianna.
Student:      Say you have GPE at the top of the roller coaster, right? And it goes down and it has GPE at the lowest point of the roller coaster, I mean kinetic. The GPE is not destroyed, it just is conserved and it reaches the highest point of the roller coaster.
Teacher:      Good. Someone else explain. Akeeme.
Student:      Umm like when there is potential energy at the top like in the Screaming Serpent Roller Coaster we had. When it goes down it changes into kinetic energy it doesn't mean that the potential energy is gone it just changes into kinetic.

Transcription files may also be generated within the Caption Editor.
